Project Title: HCK is a key regulator for macrophage polarization in kidney fibrosis
How would you sum up your research in one sentence?
We hope to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of HCK-mediated renal fibrosis in macrophages and develop a novel anti-renal fibrosis drug for kidney disease by targeting HCK.
Provide a brief overview of the research you will conduct with help from the grant.
We will examine the effects of HCK on macrophage polarization and autophagy in macrophage specific HCK KO mice in kidney disease models and identify HCK specific inhibitors as anti-fibrosis drugs for kidney disease.
What inspired you to focus your research in this area?
I am inspired in this area by my mentor, Barbara Murphy, whose knowledge, understanding and vision in this area attracted me. I will continue to accomplish the projects we started.
What impact do you hope your research will have on patients?
We hope to develop a novel anti-renal fibrosis drug for kidney disease by targeting HCK.
What are your career goals at the end of the grant period? Five years out? Ten years out?
At the end of this grant, I hope to become an independent investigator and to build stronger preliminary data for my first R01 application.
What has surprised you most about your career?
The support from my mentors and colleagues from our division to my research and career development.
What advice would you give to others to encourage them to apply for this grant funding?
Although highly competitive, this grant is worth trying. Ask for tips and their applications from whom that applied before if you are the first time to apply for a grant. The comments from the reviewers will make you application stronger even if you are not funded.
