Laura Barisoni, MD

Grants Review Committee

Biography
Dr. Laura Barisoni is a Professor of Pathology at Duke University, Director of the Renal Pathology Service, and Co-Director of the Division of AI and Computational Pathology. She has served on the Board of Directors and Board of Advisors of the Renal Pathology Society and was its president in 2019. Currently, she is a member of the steering committee and the clinical trial committee for the International Society of Glomerular Diseases. Dr. Barisoni's career as a researcher started with a focus on podocyte biology and characterization of glomerular diseases, in particular podocytopathies, and more recently, AKI, and CKD. Over the past 15 years, she has been a pioneer in applying digital pathology and computational image analysis to renal disease, particularly in clinical trials and large nephrology consortia. She played a pivotal role in establishing the digital pathology repositories (DPR) for the Nephrotic Syndrome Study Network (NEPTUNE) and Cure Glomerulonephropathies (CureGN) in North America, serving as DPR lead and chairing the NEPTUNE pathology committee. Dr. Barisoni is also a co-investigator in the Central Hub and KMAP of the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP). As a principal investigator of a multi-PI R01 grant, she leverages computational image analysis to identify novel digital biomarkers for disease progression in focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and minimal change disease (MCD). Drawing from extensive datasets provided by nephrology consortia, she has led multiple projects integrating digital pathology, computational image analysis, as well as clinical and molecular data. In addition, Dr. Barisoni has spearheaded the development of novel digital pathology-based scoring systems, including BLISS for Fabry's disease and NDPSS for nephrotic syndrome, further advancing precision diagnostics in renal pathology.
