Biography
Our primary research program focuses on the mechanism(s) by which Kruppel-Like Factors (KLFs) and their downstream signaling in regulating fundamental cellular processes in the kidney, as it relates to regulation of cell differentiation and metabolism. We are also investigating the role of KLFs in the developing kidney and cell regeneration. Furthermore, we are currently using novel in vitro and in vivo approaches to establish the physiological and pathophysiological functions of KLFs in various disease processes (Diabetic Kidney Disease, Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, acute kidney injury transition to kidney fibrosis); as well as high-throughput screening strategies to identify small molecular compounds that might serve as novel therapeutic agents in disease based on their ability to modulate the expression and function of KLFs.

    Research Interests:

The mission of our research program is to investigate mechanisms that mediate the development and progression of kidney disease with the ultimate goal of identifying novel therapeutics. Specifically, our studies have contributed to advancing our understanding of fundamental gene regulatory processes required to maintain cellular homeostasis in the setting of kidney injury. This has led to identification of novel therapeutic targets in various disease processes such as Diabetic Kidney Disease, Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, and the transition from Acute Kidney Injury to Kidney Fibrosis.

    Personal Statement:

My experiences as a practicing nephrologist, scientist, leader, and mentor provide a strong foundation to serve on the ASN council. I have dedicated my career to improving kidney health through research, patient education and advocacy, and mentoring the next generation of scientists and nephrologists. Challenges to recruitment and retention of trainees, patient advocacy, physician well-being, and research funding remain at the forefront in our field. I would be honored to develop and implement timely strategic initiatives to help directly address these challenges with the American Society of Nephrology.
