Dr. Guti rrez is the Hilda B. Anderson Endowed Chair in Nephrology, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology, and Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), the CTSA hub based at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He also serves as the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research in the Heersink School of Medicine and Associate Vice President of Medicine and Biomedical Research at UAB. Using both epidemiologic and patient-oriented clinical research approaches, the primary focus of Dr. Guti rrez's group has been elucidating potentially modifiable risk factors for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease, particularly in disadvantaged populations. Dr. Guti rrez has a track record of publications and other high-impact studies that have highlighted the associations of environmental and biological factors with kidney and cardiovascular disease in individuals across the spectrum of kidney function. He has multiple leadership and administrative positions related to large multi-institutional research collaborations including serving as the PI of the CCTS, the MPI of the O'Brien Kidney Resource Alliance National Coordinating Center, and as the PI of a U2C training grant in interdisciplinary kidney, urology, and non-malignant hematology science.
